Making Your Own Moss Hanging Baskets

Making your own moss hanging baskets
Materials needed:
  1. You can choose wire basket frames 8-14 inches as well as half baskets. The larger the basket the less likely it will dry out
  2. Wire the bottom with a saucer.
  3. Lay moss on the bottom also to hold in moisture
  4. Use Marigold Nurseries Hanging Basket Mix for the layers in your hanging basket. This contains water-retaining materials, which will swell up with water and retain the moisture during the warmer summer months.
  5. Make sure you water all your plants well before making your basket, handling your plants while doing your basket can stress them out.
  6. Line your first layer of your basket with moss, add some soil, and add some plants, as you like. Remember to bend your wires of your basket back the way it was.
  7. As you work your way up the basket add more moss and soil and continue on. Three layers are enough when making your basket.
  8. When you reach the top layer of your basket add a plastic collar before filling up with soil. It supports the top layer of soil better.
  9. At the top there is room for larger upright plants such as a geranium, non-stop begonia or even a New Guinea impatiens for a few suggestions.
  10. Water the basket well after planting with a solution of a transplanting fertilizer: 15-30-15 or 10-52-10 (the high middle numbers are for transplanting. Keep your basket undercover until at least the beginning of May.
Tips For Success After Planting:
  • Do not allow your basket to dry out
  • During hot weather; it may be necessary to water morning and evening
  • Fertilize often
  • Half strength fertilizer every other week is recommended
  • Use 14-14-14 controlled release fertilizer when planting

Plants That Need Shade

Lawn Care
Late Jan-Feb
  • Apply lime to lawn. This sweetens the soil and stresses the moss
March
  • Apply moss control if necessary
  • Power rake and clean up
  • This is a good time of year to apply a quick release fertilizer such as 12-4-8

Remember: A healthy, vigorous growing lawn makes it harder for moss and weeds to establish.
